I remember this from my childhood; the name is forever etched in my memory. The second born child is virtually ignored, claimed as a Chinese custom; I'm the second born, and I have no memory of this bothering me.Yes, it's a fun read for a child. So I got a copy for my two year old, who also enjoys it (though he's not repeating the name yet, after a single reading).But reading it as an adult, I don't like the orientalism it relies on for the story. You can read other one star reviews that go into more detail on this, but it's put forward as a Chinese folk tale, when there's nothing authentically Chinese about it, including the book's namesake. Yes, it's racist. I can't decide if we'll be reading it again.
If you read this book and you're not chanting the name by the end of the story, you're missing the point. His imagination is captive for the duration. When he reads this story, a light comes on.
(who is now nine). He gets into this one. This story was hilarious when I was 7 adn it was uproariously funny when I read it to my 7 year old.
A light that doesn't come on when he's reading other stories. Kids love for stories to be read to them over and over, but even my son tires of stories after a while. After all these years, he has not grown tired of this timeless classic.
He lives this story. And I must admit, so is mine.
Tikki Tikki Tembo was my favorite book to read and have read to me as a child. I love it so much that when i went away to college, i decided to bring it with me and read it to all of my friends. they love it too.
